Amazing Study on Knee Pain
New England Journal of Medicine, July 2002 reports that surgeries for osteoarthritic knees is no better than placebo in reducing pain or improving function. A total of 180 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomly assigned to receive arthroscopic debridement, arthroscopic lavage, or placebo surgery. What makes this a great study is that the placebo was sham surgery. The participants received incisions to the skin and anesthesia, but nothing was done to the joint. When the researchers followed up with the subjects 2 years later, there was no difference in the three groups. Most surgical procedures have never had this type of study used to evaluate effectiveness.
You have options, this video describes one excellent alternative.
